The first recorded mention of the homestead of Helland Barton
was in 1345, and it was owned by the farming Martyn family from the 17th Century until the middle of the 19th Century, when they emigrated to New Zealand. Around this time the farm consisted of approximately 400 acres and employed 19 labourers. For the next 100 years, Helland Barton was owned and farmed by the Muttons, a Cornish mining family whose descendants remain in North Cornwall.
