Priorwood is an imposing property, which is thought to date from around 1815. In 1875 it was substantially reconstructed by Peddie and Kinnear. It was further altered in 1946. Priorwood's former walled garden and cottage are now in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The house has all of the elegance associated with properties of this age, with many period features and high ceilings.

The property is constructed from attractive red sandstone and occupies an excellent, central position in Melrose, overlooking the abbey. Priorwood is approached by a driveway which leads to a gravelled parking and turning area on the north side of the property. From here, steps with a wrought iron balustrade lead down to the extensive lower lawn which is shielded by mature trees including birch, sycamore, larch and leylandii on the west boundary. To the south side of the house there is a large lawn, interspersed with shrubs and trees including laurel, buddleia, birch and lime.
