Elegantly restored 5 bedroom villa style farmhouse for sale in Umbria with swimming pool, guest apartment and terrific views in a fantastic location.

About this property

  • Molino dell'Olio is an elegantly restored five bedroom farmhouse, with more of a formal villa style both inside and out. Situated between the towns of Citerna in Umbria and Monterchi in Tuscany, the property enjoys close proximity to both and views to each. The south and west facing views from the house are spectacular, with the hilltop town of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina prominent in the sweeping vista.

The ground floor of the villa is occupied primarily by a large open plan reception room, which the owner uses as a working art studio. From this reception room a short flight of steps takes you to a guest bedroom with adjacent changing room/gym. Another short set of steps leads down from the main room, through a smaller reception area, into an area with an independent apartment. The apartment has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a new kitchen and two small reception rooms, both of which have double doors leading to the front terrace. The apartment can be used as a whole, or divided into two 1-bed mini apartments.

The first floor is the owner's main residence, accessed via the original external stairs at the back of the house, and is elegantly finished and furnished in a classical style. An elegant entrance hall leads straight into a sizeable and light living room, with large windows overlooking the front garden. On one side of the living room is a guest suite, while on the other side you find the kitchen with old stone fireplace, which has access to the first floor terrace and lovely views. Also on the first floor is the owner's main bedroom suite, with bathroom and separate wardrobe area. The main bedroom also has access to the terrace, which can be covered by a canopy during the hot summer months.

Approximately a hectare of land comes with the property, which contains the 10x5m swimming pool, landscaped gardens and flower beds, fruit trees and over one hundred olive trees. The property has two gates opening onto the very quiet road leading past the house, which in turn helps to supply the property with both municipal water and methane.

A beautifully appointed, elegant house in a sought after location with wonderful views.

Additional information

  • This is a lovely little hilltop village most famous for being the home of Piero della Francesca's Madonna del Parto. Painted between 1455 and 1465 the fresco is in honour of the artist's mother who was born in Monterchi. Once located in a little church just outside the village, the fresco now has a little museum all to itself.
  • The name of the town is said to derive from the Latin ‘Mons Herculis', according to legend the demi god Hercules is said to have founded Monterchi after having defeated the multi-headed Hydra.
  • Monterchi is also know for a Polenta festival that has been held every September since 1973.
  • Known in Roman times as Civitas Sobariae, this lovely little Umbrian village was invaded many times by the barbarian hordes. IN medieval times it belonged to the Malatesta family before being successfully incorporated into the Papal states and the Vitelli family governed it until the end of the 1600's. From the 23rd until the 26th of July 1849 Garibaldi was given refuge there along with 2,000 volunteers out of the original 4.000 who left Roma in their march towards the Adriatic coast. The village underwent severe damage during the second world war and the famous ‘Rocca' was completely destroyed by the German army. These days Citerna is a delightful little village with a couple of good restaurants and, due to the close proximity of Monterchi, Citta di Castello, Sansepolcro and more importantly, Arezzo, it has remained lively and is now is in the list of one of the prettiest villages in Italy (Borghi Piu Belli d'Italia).
