  • Balquholly Mansion House is a stunning example of a Victorian, Italianate style mansion. Dating from the late 1800s, it is believed to have been built by the Laird of Hatton Castle as a wedding present for his daughter. Other previous owners and occupants include the heiress to Chambers dictionary publishers; Polish officers during World War 2 and more recently it has been used as a hotel. It is believed that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a British writer who created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 was a guest at Balquholly. Balquholly is now a comfortable family home.   • Directions: Take the A96 north from Aberdeen to Inverurie. Take the north roundabout (second) into Inverurie (by Morrisons) and take the first left onto the B9001 to Rothienorman and proceed for around 12 miles. About 2 miles past Rothienorman, turn right onto the B992, singed Auchertless. As you leave Auchterless, continue for 1.5 miles and turn left at the sign to Woodhead. Continue along this road for about 1 mile and turn left at the crossroads. Continue for 500m and the entrance to Balquholly House is on the right.
