It has hosted King Charles II and, according to legend, Mary Queen of Scots. It was home to smuggler and secret Jacobite Charles Wightman who smuggled clan chiefs to France after the '45 and was the meeting place of the hell-raising Beggars Bennison. Wanting to secure a future for the building, in 2022, the owners approached Fife Council for pre-application planning advice on a proposal to convert and extend Dreel Castle.
