About this property

  • Alma House is a most attractive house, set within its own gardens and grounds, in the village of St Cyrus. It is a fine house which dates from 1865, or possibly earlier, and which was extended to the rear in the early 1900s. The house looks out over its own gardens, which are sheltered by trees, providing privacy. Thus a key feature of the house is that it is within the village, yet private. It is a stone built house with a slate roof, that still retains many of its period features and character.

    The house was originally called Alma Lodge and was named after the Battle of Alma, which in 1854 was the first battle in the Crimean War. It is believed that the property was gifted by a local laird to his daughter, for her forthcoming marriage, but that her fiancé was tragically killed at the battle. At some stage the name was changed to Greywalls, despite being built of red sandstone, but the name later reverted to Alma House.

    It is a house that has benefitted from considerable improvements in recent years, all of which have been done sympathetically. Since 2001 it has been substantially rewired and re-plumbed. In 2013 the shower room was refurbished, with the bathroom being redone in 2007. In about 2010 oak hardwood floors were fitted throughout much of the house and the boiler was replaced, whilst as recently as 2013 the kitchen was refurbished. In 2016, new radiators and pipework for the central heating were installed, and the bedrooms one, two and the sitting room were redecorated. In 2018 the drawing room, hall, principal bedroom, bathroom and pantry were also redecorated. Plans have also been drawn up to subdivide the pantry into an en suite for bedroom one, while still retaining a pantry serving the kitchen (for further information please contact the selling agents). As such it is a lovely family house, with well proportioned and elegant reception rooms which are ideal for entertaining, whilst retaining so much of its original character with panelled doors, cornicings and high level skirtings.

    Stone gate piers, with a gate and wrought iron railings, open onto a gravelled drive, lit by Victorian style lighting, which leads up to a parking and turning area at the front door. This opens to an entrance vestibule with cornice, oak flooring and an inner partially glazed door with engraved glass. The elegant hallway has a cornice, oak flooring and a staircase to the first floor. The drawing room is a fine and well proportioned room with a cornice, picture rail, open fireplace with a wooden mantel, high level skirting, a shelved press, oak flooring and a bay window with shutters, that overlooks the garden. Opposite is bedroom one, which has previously been used as a study, and which has a cornice, picture rail, cast iron fireplace, shelves and oak flooring.

    Also off the hallway is the cloakroom. This has an understair coat hanging area and a separate WC with a pedestal washbasin. The sitting room is another fine reception room with a cornice, picture rail, open cast iron fireplace with a painted mantel, and a bay window with shutters and window seat, overlooking the garden. This was previously used as a dining room and links through to the dining kitchen. The fitted kitchen has bespoke Iroko wooden units with a Redfyre double oven range cooker, with two induction hobs and extractor with tiled surround and wooden mantel, a porcelain sink, and a central island unit with a Gorenje four ring induction hob. The dining area has a corner fireplace with a wooden mantel. In addition there are three wall lights and a tiled floor. Off the kitchen is the pantry with tiled floor and leads through to the hallway and has wooden units and display and storage cupboards, a small sink and plumbing for a dishwasher, dryer and washing machine and space for an American style fridge freezer. Also off the kitchen is a rear lobby with shelves and coat hooks and a back door to the garden.

    An elegant staircase with cast iron banisters and wooden handrail leads up to the first floor landing. This is lit by a large double glazed skylight, and has a hatch with an attic ladder to a partially floored roof space. Bedroom two has a walk in wardrobe and a door to a shower room interlinking with the principal bedroom. The principal bedroom has a cast iron fireplace with a wooden mantel, overmantel and tiled surround and oak flooring . The interlinking shower room has a corner shower cubicle, pedestal washbasin and WC. The bathroom has a period roll top bath, corner shower cubicle, pedestal washbasin and WC. Bedroom four is presently used as a dressing room. Bedroom five has a fitted hanging cupboard.

    The expansive garden is enclosed on two sides by trees which, together with shrubs, afford privacy and shelter.

  • Alma House is situated in the popular coastal village of St Cyrus, which itself is set above a dramatic cliff with the coastline and renowned sandy beach at its foot. This part of the coastline comprises sandy bays and red sandstone cliffs. As well as St Cyrus, other popular beaches are found at Lunan Bay and Montrose. Johnshaven is a small fishing village just north of St Cyrus, from where sea fishing is available. Both St Cyrus Beach and Montrose Basin are Nature Reserves. There are lovely walks, both on the beach and in nearby woods.
  • Away from the coast the range of outdoor pursuits is impressive. Fishing can be taken on the nearby North and South Esks. Golf courses are found at Montrose, Stonehaven and Edzell, whilst the championship course at Carnoustie is within easy driving distance. There is a trout fishery at Mill of Criggie near St Cyrus.
  • St Cyrus has a primary school, together with a post office, hotel and general store. A more extensive range of shopping, business and leisure facilities is found in Montrose and Laurencekirk. Secondary education is available in Montrose, or at the Mearns Academy in Laurencekirk or the Mackie Academy in Stonehaven. Lathallan (7 miles) is a well known private school.
  • The A90 provides fast access to Aberdeen as well as to Dundee and the south. The A92 coast road links Stonehaven to Dundee via Montrose and Arbroath. Both Aberdeen and Dundee provide all the services expected of major cities. Aberdeen Airport has a range of domestic and European flights, and there are direct services from Dundee Airport to London Stansted and Amsterdam. Both Montrose and Laurencekirk are on the main east coast railway line, and there is a sleeper service to the south, as well as regular services to Aberdeen.

  • Directions: If coming from the north and Stonehaven take the A92 south, through Inverbervie, to St Cyrus. In St Cyrus, opposite the church, turn right onto Ecclesgreig Road and the entrance into Alma House will be seen immediately on the right. If coming from the south take the A92 from Montrose to St Cyrus. In St Cyrus, opposite the church, turn left onto Ecclesgreig Road and proceed as above. Alternatively from the A90 take the B9120 at Laurencekirk, signposted to St Cyrus. Proceed over the Hill of Garvock and turn right at the coast road, A92, north of St Cyrus, and proceed as above.
