About this property

  • Trethurle Cottage is a 17th century thatched cottage located in the heart of the village of Thurlestone, it comes to the market having changed ownership only twice in the past 120 years. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a fabulous property in one of the most sought after villages in the South Hams. Originally the property was two workman's cottages later combined to create a farm house. Ships timbers attributed to the Spanish Armada hospital ship “San Pedro El Mayor” wrecked in 1588 in the waters near Thurlestone, can be found in several areas of the cottage.
Trethurle Cottage has been entirely restored and brought to modern day building standards and regulations. The thatched roof has been carefully and continually maintained ( the ridge of the roof replaced in 2018) by a highly regarded local thatcher. Under the direction of a respected interior designer, the cottage incorporates natural stone floors, Inglenook fireplace, Aga, original and reclaimed beams throughout and period fittings and fixtures. New mechanical systems, top of the line appliances and carpets have just recently been updated and installed. With metre thick walls, a thatched roof and a new heating system, the property is extremely cosy and warm in the winter but cool in the summer.
From the front door entrance of the cottage, the hallway with a Cotswold stone floor leads to the dining room / kitchen, sitting room and stairs up to the first floor. The sitting room with double fronted windows is centred on a traditional Inglenook fireplace incorporating ship's timber above the hearth. The kitchen is open plan to the dining room and in its entirety is new. There is an oil fired Aga and Shaker style cabinetry, integrating top of the line Bosch appliances ( American style fridge freezer, electric oven, dishwasher, microwave and ceramic hob ) butcher block worktops and butler's sink with period mixer taps complete the furnishings. In addition is a utility and cloakroom fitted with a stacking Meile washer and dryer. The first floor comprises three large bedrooms and a newly fitted family bathroom with both period style bath and separate shower. The second floor is dedicated to the principal bedroom suite. The bedroom with its vaulted ceiling and solid pine floor is spacious and private and adjoins a beautifully appointed bathroom with a roll top cast iron bath centred under the continuing vaulted and timbered ceiling.

Leading directly off the back door to the cottage is an enclosed stone walled outdoor area which is very secluded and enjoys the sunshine. There is a path leading to the detached but very private garden which is mature and well established with a raised deck for al fresco dining overlooking the sea. The garden is the jewel in this already lovely crown, it is a delightful surprise.
