St Martins has an ancient church and a war memorial at its centre and being reached by a country lane between two of the main arteries leading northeast out of Perth, is largely undisturbed by traffic. It is about 1 mile from a village shop in Balbeggie and about 7 miles from Perth.

In addition to a primary school in Balbeggie and secondary schooling in Perth, West Lodge is well placed for some excellent private schools, with Craigclowan, Ardvreck, Glenalmond College, Strathallan, Kilgraston, Morrisons Academy and The High School of Dundee all within a 24 mile radius.
