    The Business & History
The pub was acquired in 2021 our clients as a lifestyle business and continued its reputa-tion as a welcoming community pub until closure in September 2024 so our clients can focus on other business interests. As well as serving a range of quality, independent beers and lagers and selection of curated wines and spirits the pub also served hot toasted sandwiches throughout the year and a seasonal Ploughman’s Lunch in the sum-mer months.
The pub was built around 1850 and was owned until the early 20th century by brewer Ashby's, based in Rumbridge Street in Totton. It was eventually bought out by Strong's of Romsey. In the early 1980s, the landlord was the recently re-tired football legend Peter Rodridgues who captained Saints to their historic 1976 FA Cup victory. The King Rufus was known as the “pub that gives you a hug” due to its characterful, cosy interior and wood burners.
