  • HISTORY - Eagle House was built in the late 17th early 18th century but later remodelled by one of Bath's master architects, John Wood the Elder (responsible for Queen Square and The Circus) between 1720 to 1730. The house was later associated with his son John Wood the Younger. In the 1880's the house fell under the ownership of Colonel Linley Blathwayt and his wife Mary who, on retiring, wanted a house to indulge their love of nature and horticulture.
  • The Blathwayt name was already well known in the area as the extended family also owned and lived in Dyrham House now in the stewardship of the National Trust. It was during the Blathwayt's ownership that the house really came into its own as a place of importance as it became the resting place for the women's sufferance movement and was visited by Emmeline Pankhurst, Adela Pankhurst and Annie Kenney amongst others. It became a tradition to commemorate those dear to the movement and more than 40 trees were planted in the extensive grounds marking the contribution many women had made to the sufferance movement. Emily Blathwayt took over the home with the passing of her parents but with no children of her own the house was sold on in the 1960's. Sadly the gardens were sold separately for development (now Eagle Park) and all but one of the trees were removed. A single Australian pine remains planted in 1909 by Rose Lamartine Yates. The property was then divided into apartments as were many large Georgian buildings at the time. This beautiful property has now undergone a full refurbishment to create four individually crafted and stylishly appointed properties ready for the next phase of this remarkable buildings existence.
  • Directions: Leave Bath on the A4/London Road. At the roundabout proceed straight over into Batheaston. Take the left turning signposted Northend. Follow the road into Northend continuing past the church. A little further along and just past Steway Lane is Eagle House on your left. Parking is unrestricted along the roadside.
