Period terraced house with row of back gardens in middle of St Andrews

About this property

  • 5 Queens Gardens is a terraced house with an extension to the rear which provides a garden room, shower room and bathroom. It has raised dormers along the roof line giving the top floor rooms good ceiling height. The rooms retain the house's original character and many period features.

5 Queens Gardens is unusual in the street in that it has no front garden opposite but a very large garden behind. Over the wall from this are the gardens of Queen Mary's meaning that there is a lot of green space behind the house.

    ACCOMMODATION

The tiled entrance vestibule leads to a hall. The dining room has a tiled fireplace with wooden mantel and a shelved cupboard with the dumb waiter connecting to the kitchen below. The study (or bedroom 5) has a tiled fireplace with wooden mantel, recessed shelves and a door which opens out over the light well to the basement room below. Steps could be added to make this into a direct garden entrance.

Stairs lead down to the garden level with a shower room and a garden room which contains the Worcester boiler. This room is plumbed and stripped back ready for renovation.

The stairs continue down to the basement where there is a fitted kitchen with tiled floor, two oven gas fired AGA, Schott Ceran electric cooker, fridge freezer and scullery area with a sink and which is plumbed for a dishwasher and washing machine. There is a dumb waiter connecting to the dining room upstairs, a cupboard with hot water cylinder and a store room with cupboards off. There is a sitting room beside with a blocked fireplace.

There is a beautiful drawing room on the first floor looking over the rows of gardens on the opposite side of the street. It has an Adam style fireplace with cast iron grate. There is a bedroom with built in wardrobes and a wash basin on this floor. There is a bathroom at mezzanine level.

On the top floor are three further bedrooms – two good sized double bedrooms and a single bedroom. The west facing bedroom has a curving outer wall with three windows. There are two walk in cupboards opposite, one with hanging rails and the other shelved. The attic is accessed through one of these cupboards.

    GARDENS

5 Queens Gardens owns a large back garden of 760m2 (0.19 acres) running the full width of five houses in the terrace. These gardens have become overgrown but offer huge potential with some nice mature trees and shrubs. At the end of the garden is a stone-built outhouse with tiled roof. Over the wall from this are the gardens of St Mary's College (the University of St Andrews Divinity School) meaning that there is a lot of green space behind the house.
