A deconsecrated church reconstructed and transformed into a 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom home. 18 hectares of land with gardens, a 14 x 4 swimming pool and amazing views.
Built around a 13th century church which is registered with the 'belle arte' and recorded in the church records as 'San Pietro al Col di Sole', this authentic property was painstakingly reconstructed by the present owners who purchased it in 1991 when it was deconsecrated.
The beautiful church, with an amazing arched ceiling built completely out of stone, is now a comfortable but striking living and formal dining area packed with the original features only an old church can provide.
The adjacent kitchen, spacious with raised fireplace and a cosy sitting area, has French doors which provide the main entrance to the house via a shaded dining terrace. From the ground floor hallway there are two bedrooms; a twin and a single, both of which share the Jack and Jill bathroom. All three of these rooms have French doors to the garden. On this floor, but with external access, is a technical/storage room with one of the two studies, also with independent access via steps from the garden, located above.
Stairs from the hall lead up to a corridor and to the stunning master bedroom with a fireplace, French doors leading to the loggia (external staircase) and a truly fabulous ceiling which is entirely made of wood rather than having the more traditional terracotta tiles laid over the exposed beams. There is an adorable second double bedroom on this floor as well as another bathroom. This room, as well as others, has a ceiling made up of slate slabs and exposed wooden beams; again, a beautiful and rare architectural feature in a property of this nature. There also is a study on this floor which could be used as a fifth bedroom if necessary.
As well as having the above-mentioned fireplaces Col di Sole has LPG central heating and there is internet and WIFI. There is abundant water supply at Col di Sole via two private wells and a spring.
The surrounding large, and very lovely, drought-resistant garden was designed by the internationally renowned garden designer, Don Leevers and his colleague, Alessandro Tombelli. A wonderful covered walkway, entwined with roses and worthy of a Jane Austen heroine, leads to the heated 12 x 4 metre saltwater swimming pool complete with automatic cover. The pool has its own pergola providing shade and a spot from which to enjoy the views which are spectacular and all encompassing. In all the property is surrounded by 18 hectares of its own land which is in turn surrounded by church land and land owned by the region.
Col di Sole is mid-way between Citta di Castello and Pietralunga and the approach to the property is via a kilometre or so of extremely well-maintained cypress lined gravel road (or strada bianca), and parking has been organised before arriving at the property thus keeping any cars out of sight. Additionally, there is a 15 square outbuilding, also restored.
Col di Sole is a wonderful, quirky home full of character and charm as well as modern comforts. Surrounded by picturesque and tranquil Umbrian countryside it is incredibly private with no close neighbours.
