A striking Georgian townhouse with a deceptive depth, walled garden and garage, on Barn Hill, Stamford's foremost Georgian street, in the centre of the town.

About this property

  • A beautiful Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse, which retains the grace and proportions of its era, and is offered to the market for the first time in over 25 years. The house offers elegant accommodation over three floors, with cellar, walled garden and garaging, within sight but a little removed from the house.

Barn Hill is one of Stamford's most attractive Georgian street scenes and this elegant period property is a fine late 17th century house, which is mentioned in Pevsner's architectural guide, The Buildings of England Lincolnshire.

    Accommodation
The front door opens into a wide, panelled reception hallway. The elegant dining and sitting rooms line the frontage of the house, each with high ceilings, elegant cornice and panelling, marble fireplaces and shuttered Georgian windows, with window seats. The sitting room has a wood burning stove and a partially glazed rear door, beneath a fanlight, to the garden.

The hallway leads past the staircase and a cloakroom to the stone flagged farmhouse kitchen, a spacious and symmetrical room with a double oven Aga, solid wooden suite and exterior garden door, with a utility room alongside.

On the first floor, there are three well-proportioned double bedrooms. Bedroom one has an en suite shower room, whilst bedroom two has a Jack & Jill en suite, which doubles as the family bathroom, with a full suite incorporating bath and separate shower. Bedroom three is currently an elegant dual-aspect drawing room, with shuttered windows and marble fireplace.

Rising to the second floor there is a half landing study, with views over the garden, and two further double bedrooms served by a second full suite family bathroom.

    Outside
The walled garden is accessed from the kitchen and sitting room and is fully enclosed, abutting the adjoining Trinity Methodist Church. A stone flagged terrace leads from the house, passing an L-shaped stone workshop/garden outbuilding that adjoins the kitchen within the garden, en route to the central lawn, around which gravelled pathways, with well stocked borders, lead to a raised seating terrace overlooking an ornamental pond at the far end of the garden. The garage is located at the far end of the Methodist church's car park, accessed from North Street.

This is a fabulous family home and I love its elegant flow. I also love the peaceful town setting, with little passing traffic and yet a truly central town position, so convenient for the schools, green spaces and rail station. The garden is delightful and private and I like the thought of the soft-lit stained glass windows from the church alongside when Christmas comes. I have operated in the town for six years, and yet this is just the second substantial town house on Barn Hill marketed, to my knowledge, in that time.
