    • "Campo Marzio" is a rione of Rome in Municipio I, named after the Latin for "Field of Mars", dedicated, in ancient Rome, to the god of war because, during the Republican Age, only military activities and sports were practised there. During the Imperial Age, several public buildings appeared: stadiums for athletic games, gymnasiums, theatres, a naumachia (naval stadium), temples and shrines, dedicated not only to Mars, but also to other gods. By the end of the 1st century, the Rione was already completely urbanized. The area was the location of several Roman monument, that still exist, at least in part. Over the Middle Ages Campo Marzio fell into a long oblivion: the villas were abandoned, while the public buildings in the plain area turned to ruins. Just in the 17th-18th centuries the local population began to grow again and Campo Marzio turned into an upmarket district. Today the district includes the most busy shopping streets, crowded by thousands of fashionable stores, bars, restaurants, night clubs. This has become the true spirit of the district. During the working hours, Campo Marzio can be a real chaos, especially on Saturdays; but then, when the streets turn empty, or on Sundays, in the early hours of the day, the atmosphere becomes once again the original one.
