A former Methodist Chapel with potential for further development
Situated on the west side of the village green in the picturesque village of Green Hammerton is St. Joseph's Church, serving from 1961 until 2022 as a 'chapel of ease' to Our Lady's Church in Acomb (a chapel of ease being a church building other than the main parish church, built within the bounds of a parish for the attendance of those who cannot reach the parish church conveniently).
In 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the parish to suspend worship at St. Joseph's and after careful consideration it was decided to close the chapel for worship. There is now an opportunity to acquire the building and potentially form into a home or business, subject to the necessary planning permissions and regulations.
The building has been constructed from brick under a pantile roof, with some distinctive brick arches to the front elevation framing three large arched 6 paned timber windows, which fill the main hall with natural light.
Entering via a small vestibule, the former Nave is a generous space enhanced by the vaulted ceilings and unique timber beams. Running the length of the main hall is a back corridor leading to his and hers WC's and an office. An external door leads from the corridor into the rear west facing yard, which has a number of deconsecrated graves.
