About this property

  • Dale Cottage and Dale Cottage Barn are currently owned by an exceedingly well regarded, two time Oscar nominated international film designer as his country retreat. In the late 19th century, Dale Cottage was lived in by S J Lamorna Birch, one of the most respected Newlyn School artists.
The Cottage and Cottage Barn sit in the most wonderful, rural surroundings along a quiet, no-through road and track which serve Boswarthan Farm and the eleven other residential properties. A small vibrant community including farmers, artists, designers, actors, musicians etc. The farm and the surrounding buildings were formerly owned by the historic Bolitho Estate, with the farm remaining in their ownership and under the Stewardship of the tenant farmer. The eleven individual residences have been sold off and converted one by one over the last 30 years. Dale Cottage and Dale Cottage Barn were the first to be sold and are the first buildings on the left when you arrive at this beautiful hamlet.

Ahead through an opening is the kitchen and bathroom and to the right, the doorway into the living/dining room.

The kitchen is flooded with light from two Velux windows on the sunny southerly elevation and has bespoke, hardwood painted fitted wall and base units under roll edge solid worktops with plentiful preparation space, an exposed granite wall with an internal window looking through to the living/dining room. There is also a useful pantry/shelved storage cupboard, and rear lobby which serves the downstairs bathroom.
The living room/dining room is a spectacular, dual aspect room under voluminous vaulted ceilings, almost 15' high, giving a truly spectacular feel, flooded with light from three Velux windows and high level deep sill window to the front. The most notable feature being an extraordinary full height Tudor granite fireplace with inset multi fuel burning stove. A set of stairs ascend at either end of this room, one leading up to the mezzanine and the other to the principal bedroom.

Stone stairs to the left of the fireplace lead up to the principal bedroom. A bright and sunny dual aspect bedroom with two fitted storage cupboards. A wide square archway opens through to the ensuite bathroom which also has French doors leading out to the upper garden. At the other end of the living/dining room a wooden staircase leads up the galleried mezzanine second bedroom with an Oriel window overlooking the garden, ideal as an occasional single room.

Local information

  • The small hamlet that nestles around Boswarthan Farm is located very much off the beaten track just above the village of Madron. Less than a mile away in Heamoor is a thriving village shop, a very good chip shop and a Cornish pasty shop. Situated on the northern periphery of the colourful harbour side town of Penzance, Dale Cottage sits equidistant between the north and south Cornish coasts and within easy striking distance of either, with the rugged north Cornish cliff tops near Zennor a short distance away with the famous Gurnards Head restaurant and the Tinners Arms. Just a 25-minute drive from Boswarthan Farm is the legendary town of St Ives with all of its fabulous shops, galleries, restaurants, superb beaches and the celebrated Porthminster Beach Café.
  • Penzance, just 3 miles away, is considered the capital of West Cornwall and is at the end of the train line from Paddington with a regular direct service. The town has a rich seafaring heritage and its centre abounds with period buildings, artisan shops and a wide array of high street names and more specialised retailers and national supermarkets. The area is also famous for its arts and there are many galleries in Penzance and neighbouring Newlyn which also has a large and colourful fishing fleet, fish market, restaurants, cinema and an excellent coffee shop. Within Penzance there are hotels, restaurants, cafés, museums, entertainment for all ages and a local hospital.
  • Slightly further away on the way to Helston is Porthleven, now not only a spectacular harbour but a culinary hotspot with its incredible range of quality restaurants and an annual food festival.
