Stonewood Barn was converted in 2009. Being within the curtilage of a listed building, the barn has been sympathetically and beautifully designed to a very high standard retaining many of the original features. The original ventilation openings have been converted into windows and offer in natural light plus a wonderful feature. The house is double glazed throughout and has wiring for a sound system. The whole property is beautifully presented with tiled flooring throughout the ground floor and wonderful decoration which fits extremely well with the character of the barn.

The ground floor offers versatile living accommodation with an open plan sitting room and snug with an exposed timber and stone, open inglenook with a wood burning stove and a door leading outside to the rear courtyard garden. Steps lead down into the spacious family kitchen dining room, which is a great space. The kitchen has an integrated pyrolytic (self-cleaning), Neff oven with a combination microwave and a warming drawer. There are a number of fitted units with a central island also containing units and drawers with an induction hob. The first floor has a principal bedroom which is double aspect with an en suite shower room and fitted double wardrobe. There is a family bathroom with large laundry and towel cupboard. There are three further double bedrooms: one currently being used as a sitting room (perfect for bird watching!); the other as a home office, with large ceiling to floor storage cupboard/wardrobe.

The Gardens

Entering through the “Moon Gate” the Oriental Garden is a haven of tranquillity surrounded by a natural bamboo fence, yellow and black bamboos, rhododendrons, camellias, a huge Chinese Papyrus, and a beautiful Nyssa japonica tree. It is a lovely, cool place to sit on a hot day or to enjoy the morning sun. The rear terrace is laid with natural limestone paving. Along the back fence, all year-round interest is provided by a Photinia “Red Robin” hedge. On the house side, seven different varieties of hydrangea and a solanum give summer/autumn interest. Steps take you to the upper level of the terrace with the Vine House and more troughs for fruit, herbs, vegetables etc. There are three outside power points and sensor lights to the terrace. The Vine House has power sockets and is ideal as a growing/over wintering space.

Along the side passageway is a mini orchard with columnar fruit trees growing in deep troughs. There are two varieties of apple, a crab apple, plum, greengage, damson, raspberries, and blackberries. A prolific clematis montana “Marjorie” grows along the fence. Both the side troughs and the rear planting benefit from an automatic watering system.

The main garden receives direct sunlight all day with an east to west orientation. The garden is organic, with no chemicals used, and planting has been done with birds, bees, and butterflies in mind. The garden is underplanted throughout with a wide variety of spring-flowering bulbs and has all year-round interest, from snowdrops and evergreens in the winter, through to autumn-coloured shrubs and perennials and everything in between.

The wildlife pond is home to frogs, newts, and dragonflies amongst other species. The bog garden behind the pond is kept moist all year by run-off from the pond. It is planted with many irises, primulas, and loosestrife (Lythrum). To the front of the house is a separate potting shed and a car port. A gravel driveway provides ample parking for several vehicles.
