    Local information

    • If you enjoy peace and quiet, golden beaches and crystal waters then Anafi is your ideal destination. There is unique flora and fauna and numerous archaeological sites to see. Anafi is located at the south-eastern edge of the Cycladic chain of islands with Santorini (Thera) being the nearest island neighbour. The name “Anafi” (emerge in Greek) originates in antiquity, from the seductive Argonaut tale. As the Argonauts were on their way home from Colchis they fell into a terrible storm. Jason in desperation raised his arms to the skies and prayed Apollo for help. The gorgeous god of poetry and music shot an arrow in front of their ship and immediately everything around them calmed and cleared. A small island “emerged” in their view and the Argonauts went ashore in safety. The island was named Anafi because it appeared to “emerge” through the waves and consequently Apollo was worshiped locally as the Emergent or Shiner.
