About this property

  • The Rectory was constructed in circa 1845 of mellow stock brick under a slate roof and occupies a lovely mature plot opposite the islands former church. Adjacent to the garden lies a post and railed paddock with stables together with the village's former Sunday school, now converted to a lovely useful detached garden room.

The house is approached over an impressive reception hall with a fine staircase. At the front of the house is the former rector's study with fitted bookcases and shuttered windows and on the opposite side a separate dining room with high ceilings and deep shuttered windows. The drawing room features an attractive marble fireplace, two deep shuttered sash windows and high ceilings. At the rear of the house lies a comprehensively fitted kitchen/breakfast room with a wood burner and an adjacent utility/boot room. Beyond, through a back lobby, lies a wood store and access to a large scullery with the original copper and bread oven. On the first floor there are five generous bedrooms, one with an en suite bathroom. There are lovely views from all the rooms over the surrounding countryside.

The house is discreetly situated behind a high bank of mature trees and shrubs which provide for a lovely private oasis. The gardens extend to about 140' to a small woodland copse, which itself is about ¼ acre. The gardens include two large wired chicken run enclosures with hen housing. Adjacent are two post and railed paddocks extending to 0.6 acres which include a bank of stables comprising two boxes, tack room and hay barn/cart lodge with power and light. Lying adjacent to the house is a lovely detached period style garden room with pitched roof and windows overlooking the paddocks and this is reputedly the village's former Sunday school.

  • The Rectory is situated on Foulness Island, the largest of the Essex islands and the fourth largest off the coast of England. It's located near Southend-On-Sea and is owned by the MOD which provides 24 hour security. The island is an area of Natural Beauty and a haven for a great deal of wildlife. There are two villages on Foulness, the largest one is Church End and at the other end of the island is Courts End. The island extends to about 9 square miles, bounded by its sea walls and divided from the mainland by a series of tidal waterways; the River Crouch to the north, the River Roach to the west and the North Sea on the east. Foulness and the adjoining Maplin Sands are internationally famous as a haven for wildlife. This unpolluted utopia has the second largest colony of Avocets and is a winter home for thousands of wading birds and Brent Geese.
  • For the sailing enthusiast there is a quay and slipway providing a short journey over the River Crouch to Burnham-On-Crouch.
