  • History
  • 21 The Close is a red-brick villa built by Charles Harrison in the late 19th Century. Charles was the ferryman at Pull's Ferry from 1888 to 1900. He was also verger to the Dean of the Cathedral and a builder. He was granted a lease by the Dean and Chapter to build 21 The Close and lived there after leaving Pull's Ferry. He also built a row of cottages in Bishopgate and worked on the restoration of Stranger's Hall . His eldest son, Edward, married into the family of G. King and Son, glaziers and set up workshops at the property.
  • The property is in an area that from around 1100 formed part of the outercourt, which was the agricultural and industrial zone of the cathedral-priory. It included a medieval dovecot, barge yard (for the canal along what is now Ferry Lane), smithy, forge, slaughter yard, and pasture. The car park to the west of the property was a meadow called Browne's Meadow
