About this property

  • The Walled Garden is a distinctive and beautifully presented house which was designed by a local architect for the sellers' family in 2001 within the former walled garden of neighbouring Bowerhouse. There was originally a gardener's cottage on the site, and the warm red sandstone from this building was used to create the new property and features strongly in the design, as does the generous use of glass throughout. The walled area of garden is an exceptional area highlighting a wide variety of the original mature espalier fruit trees, box-edged lawn, wildflower areas, imaginatively planted beds and borders and well laid out vegetable beds.

Approached via a tree-lined drive, the single storey house has a long-paved terrace to the front and is entered through a glazed hallway with a chequerboard tiled floor. Glass doors open into the semi-open plan dining room and triple aspect drawing room; together these create a spectacular light-filled space with a high ceiling and splendid stone open fireplace. The kitchen is another fantastic living space featuring a tiled floor, fine crafted solid wood cabinetry, a four-oven oil-fired AGA with electric module, a central island unit, two sinks and plenty of room for an informal dining table. Off here is a versatile reception room, ideal as a library or family room, which has a cosy woodburner and the attractive broad beech floorboards seen throughout much of the house. Also off the kitchen is the newly restored orangery from where the full glory of the garden can be enjoyed, and a utility room with Belfast sink. A charming wine cellar incorporates part of the original old stone wall, cleverly ensuring the perfect cool temperature for wine storage.

The bedroom corridor is lit by skylights and again displays the exposed terracotta-coloured sandstone down one wall. Off here is the delightful, sunny principal bedroom which has a fully glazed wall and sliding doors out to the garden along with a dressing room and en suite bathroom which, like all the bathrooms, is characterised by Italian-style tiling and has both bath and separate shower. There are a further four double bedrooms (one also with en suite) a family bathroom and a cloakroom. An attractive and light study area is at the far end of the bedroom wing, making great use of the space, with stunning garden views. From there the garage at The Walled Garden can be conveniently accessed via a covered loggia so as to remain undercover in all weathers.

    Outbuildings
There is a pretty open fronted studio and potting shed in the garden and a striking 18th century dovecot within a 1.7 acre established arboretum off the driveway which is A Listed and still has the wooden dove nooks intact.

    Outside
While The Walled Garden is a most attractive and stylish home, it is perhaps the glorious surrounding gardens which make this property so remarkable and truly one of a kind. The gardens have previously been open to the public under Scotland's Garden Scheme and are quite spectacular; brilliantly planted with dramatic use of colour, shape and texture, sitting alongside more classic country house herbaceous borders, pockets of wildflowers and a 'hot wall' where peaches and apricots can be grown.

Woodland: A 2.5 acre area of woodland to the north side of the public road can be made available in addition and by separate negotiation.

There is something quite magical about the Walled Garden, filled with light and views to the south facing walled garden, you can shut yourself away in your own private oasis.
