About this property

  • Gleann Bhreatail Woods are divided into four blocks which occupy relatively level sites between about 50m and 220m above sea level. The woodlands were planted between 1960 and 1980 by the Forestry Commission and are now approaching maturity. The current stocked areas comprise mainly mixtures of Sitka Spruce and Lodgepole Pine, but the principal opportunity lies in the transition from timber management to restorative land use practices over a large area of low productivity woodland in an iconic and popular tourist location.

Since the opening of the Skye Bridge in 1995, the island has become more accessible and this, combined with the improved A87, gives easier road access to timber markets on the mainland.

Additional information

  • Directions: From the A87 Kyle of Lochalsh to Portree road turn left at the Sligachan Hotel towards Dunvegan. From here follow the A863 towards Carbost. After about five miles turn left on the B8009 and then take the first public road on the left hand side to Glenbrittle. Loch Moineach Forest is situated on the left hand side after about three miles. Gleann Bhreatail Woods are a further mile along the road. The Cearra Plantation is accessed off another minor road leading towards Eynort, left off the B8009 just before Carbost. Access to all the blocks, with exception of the larger of the two southmost areas, is directly off public roads. There are no internal forest roads.
