Stunning early 20th century townhouse, with lovely, enclosed and very private gardens.

About this property

  • Langlands is a stunning townhouse. It is a most elegant example of a 1920's townhouse, built in an English 17th century classical revival style. It is harled with contrasting brick details and red clay tiled roof, with imposing brick chimneys, so reminiscent of its era. Occupying a very screened and private site, the house is listed Category B and has Arts and Crafts features and still retains much of its original character. The house was acquired by the sellers in 2005 who have since undertaken an ambitious programme of works. In 2008 a fabulous orangery extension was added linking the kitchen to the gardens. The kitchen was transformed with newly fitted solid wood kitchen and creation of walk in larder. The adjoining ground floor bedrooms and bathroom were also extended and refurbished. The second floor bedrooms were also remodelled, which included the installation of a new shower room, and the bathroom and ensuite at first floor level were fully refurbished. A new central heating system was installed, with a new boiler fitted as recently as 2022. In 2011 the front porch was enclosed. Heritage leaded double glazing has also been installed with care being taken to preserve the original character of the property. With elegant and good sized reception rooms, a fabulous new kitchen and orangery, six bedrooms and a substantial garden it is a very fine family house which is also perfect for entertaining. It is beautifully presented, yet retains features such as original doors, door furniture, and cornicings.

Langlands is sheltered and screened behind a high hedge. Brick gate piers with electric gates open onto a tarred drive, with lighting and ample parking. An outer porch opens to an entrance vestibule which leads to an impressive and welcoming hall with stairs to first floor and an under stair cupboard. A garden room/study has French doors to the garden, fireplace with solid fuel stove and parquet flooring. The splendid drawing room has a fire place with over mantel and parquet flooring, while the dining room also has a fireplace and parquet flooring. A cloakroom has a wash basin and separate WC. Adjacent is an office, while the cosy sitting room has a wood burning stove. Beyond are bedrooms 1 and 2, each with a wardrobe, and an interlinking bathroom with shower, wash basin and WC. The impressive Edwin Loxley solid wood kitchen has granite worktops. Appliances include a Falcon Range cooker with five gas burners. AEG steam/convection oven, a microwave and warming drawer. An island unit has a Liebherr fridge, sink with Quooker boiling water tap and a Fisher & Paykel double drawer dish washer. In addition there is a tiled floor, integrated Bose speaker system and a step down to the orangery, lit by a large cupula and which is a wonderful space linking to the garden. Off the kitchen is a utility room with units with wooden worktops, two sinks, plumbing for washing machine, clothes pulley, door to garden and a walk in larder. The rear hallway has a back door to the car port, a cupboard with 2 wall mounted Worcester boilers, while a boot room leads to an integral garage with a roller door.

The first floor landing has parquet flooring. The principal bedroom has fitted wardrobes and an en suite with shower, wash basin and WC. Bedroom 4 has a wardrobe, while a family bathroom has a bath, 2 washbasins within a vanity unit with granite worktop, shower, WC and Amtico flooring. Stairs lead up to the second floor landing with under eaves storage cupboards. Off this is bedroom 5, a shower room with washbasin and WC, and bedroom 6 with wardrobes.

Outside, adjacent to the integral garage, is a car port with a car electric charging point. There is brick range of outbuildings including a potting shed (3.65m x 3.2m), and two stores (5.2 m x 2.65m and 2.7m x 1.8m).

The enclosed and private gardens are a delight and have some fine dry stone dyking. Adjacent to the orangery is a paved terrace, perfect for outdoor seating. There are lawns, rose borders and fruit trees, including apple, pear and plum, together with a small pond with a fountain, and a central sundial. A lower area of garden has further lawn and shrub borders. Rhododendrons and maples provide spring and autumn colour. Behind a hedge is the kitchen garden, again enclosed, with a polytunnel with a vine as well as power and water, and cold frames.
