Award winning contemporary masterpiece
Jacob's Ladder enjoys a private position on the edge of the Chilterns, yet with easy access to both Oxford (20 miles), and London (40 miles) via the M40 motorway 4.5 miles away. The road link to London is complemented by the Chiltern rail service into London, Marylebone (from 45 minutes) which operates from nearby Princes Risborough (5 miles distant).
Henley-on-Thames and Oxford offer comprehensive shopping and entertainment with local facilities available in Thame and Princes Risborough. There is racing at Newbury, Ascot and Windsor, local point-to-point meetings at Kingston Blount, rowing at Henley Royal Regatta and polo at Smith's Lawn. The surrounding Chiltern Hills provide excellent walking and riding countryside.
Jacob's Ladder is an award winning, contemporary home, sitting in 9½ acres of primarily beech woodland. Designed by architect Niall McLaughlin, it was built in 2000/2001 and in the following year was winner of a coveted Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award. It has been extensively featured in the national press as well as several books including Dominic Bradbury's New Country Homes'.
A sympathetic display of steel, glass and timber, the house pays homage to two key influences: Californian Case Study Houses (promoted by the influential American designers Charles and Ray Eames) and the architecture of Mies Van der Rohe, most evident in the sand blasted, semi-circular glass stairwell.
The house is entered on the first floor via a bridge onto a large deck which in turn provides breathtaking views across the Oxfordshire countryside. The impressive entrance is enhanced by the addition of two pools which reflect the luxuriant woodland which encases the property.
The architect's brief demanded that the house be totally at one with its surroundings and this has been admirably achieved through the intelligent layout that has been described as a series of unfolding spaces' (RIBA). Likewise the extensive use of glass provides an empathetic interface between the internal and external spaces. The 10m long indoor infinity Swimming Pool projects into the woodland and is temperature controlled to suit your requirements.
Beautifully finished, there are superb touches including cedar decking and wooden floors hand crafted from beech trees taken from the property's own woodland. There are elegant, Philippe Starck bath and shower fittings, under floor heating and cctv. All windows are double glazed and the low e' glass effectively controls the internal temperature by reflecting more than it absorbs.
A voyage through the trees, Jacob's Ladder thrives in making inventive use of its secluded woodland surroundings. The immediate area around the house has been designed to be more formal in style before gradually giving way to the inspirational woodland and landscape beyond.
