The Lindens was originally a one storey 18th century cottage but was heightened during Victorian times. Between 1906 and 1914 the cottage was owned by author Oliphant Smeaton. His granddaughter, who inherited the cottage, married the engineer Alan Munro. Munro designed the steering gears and boilers for many famous ships including the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.
