Local information

  • The picturesque village of Fairlie sits on the shore of the Firth of Clyde and looks directly onto the Isle of Arran and the Cumbraes to the west. Fairlie first developed as a fishing village as it had a good, sheltered anchorage that was used as early as the 16th century. Weaving also began to help the prosperity of the village as the demand for Paisley shawls increased in the 19th century. Around 1800 William Fife, son of John Fife, a cartwright, began building fishing boats and trading craft at Fairlie. In 1822 he built his first yacht. William's grandson, also William, was renowned for his racing yachts, building America's Cup contenders for Sir Thomas Lipton. Fife yachts were built in Fairlie until well into the 20th century.
  • The village has local facilities including a primary school, a filling station and shops, with secondary schooling, a wide range of professional services and shopping available in the nearby town of Largs. Fairlie has a railway station with journey times to Glasgow Central of just under an hour.
