  • Penpont has a village shop and primary school, with more extensive facilities in the nearby towns of Thornhill and Dumfries. Thornhill lies 15 miles north of Dumfries, where the valley of the River Nith broadens between Auldgirth to the south and Carronbridge to the north. There is a good range of amenities in Thornhill including a country hotel with dining, a gallery cafe, two small supermarkets, a butcher, bakery, pharmacy, ironmonger, hairdresser, dentist, GP medical centre and a golf course.
