    About this property

    • Oaklea is an elegant traditional sandstone villa with a slate roof. The house has been substantially renovated and improved by the current owners to form the beautiful home that stands today.

The property has retained many of its original features and the character of the period is still very much in evidence as displayed in the cornicing and ceiling roses which sit alongside the modern kitchen and bathrooms.

Oaklea is accessed via the driveway to the side, commanding a prime position in about 1.8 acres of gardens. This beautiful home has been refurbished to a superb standard and comprises around 2360 sq ft of flexible family accommodation laid out over two levels. Steps from the front garden lead through storm doors to the reception vestibule, which leads to the hallway, this gives access to most of the ground floor rooms and to a broad staircase to the upper floor. The formal drawing room to the front features a three pane window and also a side window, feature fireplace with wood burning stove, cornice and ceiling rose. The wonderfully spacious kitchen / dining room has a dual aspect, with a six pane box bay window to the front and French doors to the rear. The dining area to the front has ornate ceiling cornicing and a ceiling rose along with a traditional fireplace. The contemporary modern kitchen to the rear has a central island with breakfast bar, excellent storage at wall mounted and counter levels and includes integrated appliances. The kitchen gives access to the useful boot room, utility and store room. There is a downstairs bedroom, presently used as a home gym, and a modern shower room.

The upper floor is accessed via a fine broad staircase with wrought iron balustrade and there is a feature window at the half landing along with a most impressive family four piece bathroom which includes a freestanding slipper bath. There is also a double bedroom at this level. On the first floor are two further double bedrooms, including the impressive master suite with dressing room and en suite shower room, which at one time would have been an additional bedroom. The study completes the first floor accommodation.

Oaklea is set in gardens extending to about 1.8 acres with a wide range of mature trees and shrubs with lawned gardens to the front and rear with pond to the side, patio area to the rear and front. A pillared driveway leads to the side of Oaklea with parking for several cars.

This is without doubt the best house I have ever marketed in the area. Great views, great gardens, architecturally interesting and to my mind the perfect open plan kitchen and family area.

    Local information

    • Oaklea occupies an enviable elevated position in beautiful gardens with views from the first floor over the Firth of Clyde and beyond.
    • Development first began in Kilcreggan in 1840 when the use of steamers on the Clyde made it more accessible. The first houses were used only as summerhouses, but as time went on, permanent occupation took place. As roads and vehicles developed, steamer traffic declined, and one by one, the piers closed. Today, Kilcreggan Pier remains the only traditional pier on the Clyde still in daily use. It has a rich architectural heritage of Victorian mansions and castles. Famous architects such as Alexander “Greek” Thomson, William Leiper and John Honeyman were among many to build impressive homes for wealthy clients.
    • Today, many such homes remain, with villagers commuting to Glasgow in around an hour, either by road, or by ferry, with a journey time of around 15 minutes to Gourock. Glasgow Airport can be reached in around 45 minutes under normal driving conditions. Kilcreggan has its own primary school with the local secondary school at Helensburgh, the nearest town (16 miles) where Lomond School also provides excellent private schooling at primary and secondary level. Helensburgh is regarded as one of Scotland's most desirable towns, with first class local shopping, a swimming pool and golf course and Rhu Marina nearby. Cove, the adjoining village to Kilcreggan, has a thriving social scene, with a Burgh Hall, Tennis and Bowling Club and excellent facilities for younger sailors to learn on Loch Long. Loch Lomond and the world-renowned Loch Lomond Golf Club are within 23 miles. Some of Britain's most testing sailing waters are to be found on Scotland's west coast.
